Historic
Tour to Roncesvalles (Orreaga)
In the Pyrenees to the north of
Pamplona lies the mountain pass at
Ibañeta where history tells us the Basque
people fought the army of Charlemagne in
778. The view from the pass is
breathtaking. This is also the main route
for Pilgrims passing through Navarra on
their way to Santiago de Compostela from
France. The Royal collegiate church of
Roncesvalles was built in the 13th century to
help the pilgrims who crossed the Pyrenees and
is considered to be one of the finest examples
of French Gothic on the Iberian Peninsula.
Inside youÄôll find the
tomb of Sancho the Strong, the king of Navarre,
among other treasures. Lunch will be at
the Restaurante Ariitza in Burguete (Auritz), a
village familiar to fans of Hemingway.
