Restaurante
Alkalde, Jorge Juan, 10, Madrid
Taberna - Traditional Basque cuisne
Moderate -
This excellent Basque (Pais Vasco)
restaurant, located on the most
fashionable street in the upscale shopping
and residential district of Salamanca, is
very popular at midday with businessmen
and woman, and shoppers. Sample the
delicious tapas at the Basque tavern
atmosphere of the upstairs bar, or enjoy a
full meal in the "Caserio" (Basque
farmhouse ambiance), the downstairs dining
room. Expect to receive great service as
well as a wide variety of great, authentic
Basque cuisine and very large portions.
Try the trout, or veal, or order the very
generously sized platter of Spanish hams,
the "surtido Ibérico". Excellent
selection of Rioja wines and the slightly
petulant (fizzy) white Basque "txakoli",
which goes nicely with their fish
dishes.
Reservations are usually not required
during lunch, but are recommended. Closed
Saturday night and all day Sunday, during
July and August.

Cafeterias - Traditional Regional
Cuisine
Moderate -
This small cafe is a great find for a
casual meal at noon, or late in the
evening. It's one of the few places you'll
find open during late July and August when
everyone else has closed for the season,
having fled Madrid's oppressive heat at
the height of the season.
Reservations are usually not required.
