Restaurante Alkalde, Jorge Juan, 10, Madrid
Taberna - Traditional Basque cuisne
Moderate -

This excellent Basque (Pais Vasco) restaurant, located on the most fashionable street in the upscale shopping and residential district of Salamanca, is very popular at midday with businessmen and woman, and shoppers. Sample the delicious tapas at the Basque tavern atmosphere of the upstairs bar, or enjoy a full meal in the "Caserio" (Basque farmhouse ambiance), the downstairs dining room. Expect to receive great service as well as a wide variety of great, authentic Basque cuisine and very large portions. Try the trout, or veal, or order the very generously sized platter of Spanish hams, the "surtido Ibérico". Excellent selection of Rioja wines and the slightly petulant (fizzy) white Basque "txakoli", which goes nicely with their fish dishes.

Reservations are usually not required during lunch, but are recommended. Closed Saturday night and all day Sunday, during July and August.
