Restaurants - Navarra (Nafarroa) - Pamplona-Iruña, Burguete, Lekunberri, Cintuénigo, Almandoz, Irurita

Hartza, Juan de Labrit, 19 bajo, Pamplona-Iruña
Classic Navarran Basque Cuisine
Moderate to Expensive - 3 forks

Reservations at this simple, yet elegant restaurant are recommended well in advance, especially during fiesta. Set in a turn of the century residence directly across the street from the Plaza de Toros, this restaurant is well deserving of its praise. The owners, three sisters; Juli, Mari and Manoli, and their staff, women in period dress, are an asset to the family atmosphere that pervades this establishment. Try the alubias (red beans from Tolosa), its menestra (a vegetable medley) and costillas (baby lamb chops), or a dish of the wild mushrooms, "perretxikos". When you order your after dinner brandy, don't be surprised if they leave the bottle on the table for your convenience, and enjoy the special "Hartza Habano" when you leave. A simple touch of class following an excellent dinner.

Open for lunch and dinner during the Fiesta. Reservations required. Closed Sunday nights, Mondays, all of August and from 23 December to 3 January.

El Recreo, Iturrama 20, Pamplona-Iruña
Taberna Bar, Classic Navarran Cuisine

Executive Chef: Francisco Javier Ibarrola

We were amazed by the quality of the food and its presentation. We first dropped in to sample the tapas, but decided to stay for lunch once we tasted some of the best tapas in Pamplona, which is saying a lot. The chef / owner knows his talents and displays them with his presentations and selections. The menu changes with the season, but try their outstanding ensalada mixta, a simple dish fit for a king. Call ahead for a table and Señor Ibarrola will create a meal just for you - whatever is fresh in the market that day.
